Su objetivo fue el de promover la enseñanza de la Biología con la metodología BSCS. Se vinculó a la Universidad de Antioquia como docente y creó las cátedras de Ecología General y Ecología Vegetal. Laboró, hasta su jubilación, como docente en cursos de Botánica General, Taxonomía Vegetal y Botánica Económica. Desarrolló proyectos de investigación en Sistemática Vegetal, Composición y Estructura de Comunidades Vegetales. Impulsó el Postgrado en Biología y el desarrollo de trabajos de investigación de los estudiantes del programa de Biología. Fue directora del Herbario HUA porvarios años. En 1971, recibió su título de maestría en la Universidad de Purdue y el de Doctorado en la Universidad de Texas en 1980.
