Repatriation of these citizens was made possible because of the exercise of a right attached to EU citizenship and because of a European mechanism coordinating Member State action and EU support in the field of consular protection, especially in emergency situations. Some interesting lessons can be drawn from this experience concerning the extraterritorial dimension of EU citizenship and the role of the EU as a global actor.
